The "Selfie" - the 2013 Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year

(This article will take you 2 minutes to read)

Britain's Oxford University Press, the publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary, the stalwart of English classrooms, the ubiquitous bookshelf dictionary and the undisputed leading English dictionary of all time has declared the word of the year for 2013 to the "Selfie".

Alistair Pugin
Originally a smartphone self portrait, the selfie has burst from the vocabulary of instagram and twitter to become the primary shorthand for any self taken photograph.

Interestingly, other 2013 words that were considered include:

"twerk" - a sexually provocative dance;

"Showrooming" - visiting a shop to look at products before buying them online;

"Bingewatch" - viewing many episodes of a television series in a single session,

and "bitcoin" - a proposed digital currency.
