QR Code Fails of 2011

(This article will take you 4 minutes to read)

QR Codes have grown in popularity in 2011, even if just with marketers, as I am not convinced yet of the wholesale adoption by consumers.

The problem with QR codes as far as I can see is that it seems to be used as a afterthought - "oooh we must have a QR code in our campaign, quick get one in the mix.." and then the lack of thought and planning then plays out to giving QR codes a bad rep.

Of all the social media platforms discussed in this “[Corporate] Social Media @ Intervate //” series, I expect this one to the be the most ubiquitous amongst the Intervate community.  It’s a big assumption to assume that everyone at Intervate is on Facebook, but one nevertheless I think I am willing to make.
Facebook is the second most popular site in the world coming second only to A recent June 2011 research report stated that in the UK, Facebook accounted for 16% of all online time, with Google sites accounting for 11%.

“Think big, start small, fail fast, scale soon”

The concept of “Think big, start small, scale soon” is not new in terms of management and leadership education; however the concept of including “fail fast” seems to have been a new addition to this common mantra.

It sounds great, but how many people actually understand it, or more to the point have taken the time to think about understanding what it could mean to them, to their situation or application.  A quick poll suggests to me: not many!

So I thought I would share my ideas on the interpretation of this mantra in my context of building my company’s social business brand and strategy.

Social Business Play Book - Chapter 1 - The Social Business Introduction

This article will take the following time to read: 4 minutes

[Corporate] Social Media/Social Business // +1 - LIKE ! #COSIGN RT

‘Social Media’ is not just for the geeks, the ‘Generation Y’ or the ‘Generation iY’, social media is ubiquitous in our day-to-day lives across the generations.  Some of the largest brands rely upon social media for their marketing including Coke, Nike and Starbucks, but it’s not just consumer brands that are being marketed with social media, b-2-b brands including Dell, IBM, Cisco and Microsoft also capitalise on the latest trends in this space.

Most companies have dipped their toe into the vast ocean that is social media and may take their time to rival the bigger technology brands and have a team of corporate social media’ites in their ranks – but the key is to make a positive start, beginning with yourselves.

Why Social Media – it’s the fastest growing media in the history of the world.  Think about it.  It took television 38 years to reach 150 Million people and FaceBook did it in 5 !

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Sales Professionals - Warning Signs of a Sales Slump and how to recover.

Marc Fletcher, Sales & Marketing Director, Intervate Project Services (Pty) Ltd, Cape Town, South Africa.

“The habit that becomes prevalent in ones life is the one we feed. Where we focus our attention grows stronger and will manifest.”

As a technology professional with over 20 years experience in technology consulting I have accrued a considerable amount of knowledge and experience in the field of sales and marketing of technology solutions.  I have worked for government institutions, the largest blue-chip consulting firms, run my own successful business and been a part of a number of others where I have applied this knowledge and experience and gathered more from colleagues, partners, clients and friends.  My advice does not come from direct b-school teachings but from my drive and desire to achieve and to be successful.  I read, I research, I practice and I modify until I find a method that works and then I look to refine it as the situation changes.

If you have bought a new iPad 2 in South Africa then read this :)

On Friday 29th April 2011 the Apple iPad2 arrived in South Africa.  At 09:00 on the Friday there were queues forming at the two shops that were selling the new iPad: Incredible Connection and the iStore at the Century City Mall in Cape Town.

I was one of the luck ones and I managed to get my iPad2 3G 64GB before they sold out, at about 09:15 !!

So then the saga begins…

Post Apocalyptic Tree

Post Apocalyptic Tree, originally uploaded by MarcFletcher.
An Apocalypse (Greek: ἀποκάλυψις apokálypsis; "lifting of the veil" or "revelation") is a disclosure of something hidden from the majority of mankind in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception, i.e. the veil to be lifted.

The term also can refer to the eschatological final battle, the Armageddon, and the idea of an end of the world. In Christianity The Apocalypse of John (Greek Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰωάννου) is the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Christian Bible.

Japan has made me think more about the reality that Mother nature really is trying to tell us something. Wonder if we will realise what the message is in time.

FaceBook Email - They have done it...get yours

Facebook has finally become the only Web 2.0 social media tool you need to run your life !

They have just added email.  So I have just logged into facebook, wandered over to my messages to find that I can turn on  So I turn it on, pop over to Gmail, and send myself an email. Why? I dont know because we all know its going to arrive, but its just that seeing is believing thing inside me. - another email address - but I quite like it.
And predicted, there sits my email from myself, to me, at Facebook.

Why do I need Gmail ?

Well ok, thats a big step as Gmail does a whole lot more than just receive and allow you to send email; Do "I" use it all, well no....but I am sure lots of people do...Hmmm not so sure.  I think Facebook just took the last decades' killer app and just made it better.

Ok so what do I mean by all this, just look at it -

Facebook gives you social networking, its pretty much defined the concept of social networking: the concept where we look at a stream of information and pick on the parts that interest us;

It gives you a nice new zany Picture Library and viewer.  Ooh that viewer is cute eh.  For someone who has invested a lot of time in Flickr, I have been tempted by the new Facebook image viewer.  Hmmm slick;

It gives you events - not a feature I am really into but it kinda hit me when someone I know, advertised their birthday party via it...hmm I feel like I took a while to catch on there , but I got it now;

OK here's a great one - birthday reminders - do you know how many birthdays I now remember !  OMG, did it really take a fully automated, autonomous solution to find me a way to remember friends' birthdays, er "Hello".

And so the list goes on...oh wait, did I mention video - YouTube...who ?  Yep, really why do we need other social media tools when we have Facebook - I mean where else can you get FarmVille....

iPad 2 and iPhone 5 News

It is rumoured that Apple will start the production of iPad 2 this month and the fifth generation of iPhones will start by May this year.  This is claimed in a a Chinatimes News report. But good luck reading it !!!!

It has also been rumoured that  iPad 2 will have a dual core processor, dual cameras and USB port and SD card slot. It apparently will also have a resolution of 2048 x 1536. This is still unconfirmed and some reports have contested that the particular resolution will be seen most likely in the iPad 3.

If you have a iPad 1 its probably not worth upgrading unless you are an early adopter or you cant just stop yourself ! The investment in the 2 will show some relative enhancements but it all depends on what you use it for.

If however you havent bought an iPad 1 yet - then dont !! Wait the few extra months !
